    POSITION SUMMARY

    The New Mexico State Library, established in 1929, is committed to providing leadership that promotes effective library services and access to information to all citizens of New Mexico. The State Library provides services that support public libraries as well as delivers direct library services to rural populations, state agencies, the visually impaired and physically disabled, and students and citizens conducting research. There are more than 2 million items in the State Library's collection!

    As part of the Public Services Bureau, this position provides advanced or expert level government information services to library customers, as well as professional oversight of both the State Documents Depository Clearinghouse library system and collection, and the Federal documents New Mexico Shared Regional depository collection. The person in this position must demonstrate initiative and a strong customer service commitment. The person in this position provides leadership for and coordination of all aspects of the government depositories and collections by planning, organizing, and directing activities to develop, collect, maintain, and provide permanent public access to government publications. This position conducts complex research in order to respond to state and federal government information requests. This position promotes government information services and collections.

    HOW DOES IT GET DONE?

    • Provide expert, professional level government information reference service in order to provide access to information and guidance to information sources for the general public, scholars, NM libraries, and government agencies.

    • Manage the selective and regional Federal depository collections to ensure current and future access to both physical and digital publications, focusing on the Four Corners region.
    • Administer the State Documents Depository Clearinghouse to ensure that the public, librarians, and state employees have access to New Mexico state publications throughout the state via the network of 20 depository libraries.

    IDEAL CANDIDATE

    • Knowledge of state and/or federal government documents depository programs

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Master's degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (or recognized by the appropriate body of another country) with two (2) years of experience in performing and providing advanced library technical operations, effective library and information services, plus cataloging experience and managerial experience.     EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

    SUMMARY

    The Reference Librarian shall be responsible to the Director of Library Services. Duties and responsibilities shall be, but not limited to, the following: 

    • Assist students, faculty, staff, and community patrons with information resources and research.
    • Maintain library technology, resolve subscription database issues; assist computer services staff with library network as needed.
    • Perform reference desk functions.
    • Develop, schedule, and conduct library bibliographic instruction sessions.
    •  Track and compile electronic resource usage statistics for subscription evaluation and required state, federal, and library association reports.

    SUMMARY

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Library Clerk I is responsible for processing library materials, adding materials to the library database, maintaining accurate processing procedures and inventory supplies, issuing new and updating current library cards, greeting the public, answering questions or directing patrons to appropriate personnel, and may oversee the work of volunteers and youth workers.     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    Knowledge: Dewey Decimal system and Library software preferred.  Integrated library systems or experience imputing and retrieving data from medium-large database products (such as SalesForce, QuickBooks, or inventory systems). Basic office procedures and protocols, such as reception, telephone etiquette, filing records and correspondence, sorting, and typing.    

    Skills: Experience with cash handling and basic accounting procedures. Must be able to type rapidly and accurately enough to successfully produce documents/spreadsheets, communicate via e-mail, or perform data entry as necessary to accomplish the essential functions of the position (must test at or above 30 net WPM).   Use of technology, equipment and software typically used in the office environment. Good computer skills to include word processing.  Must have excellent verbal communication skills.     

    Abilities:  Perform daily duties while facing regular interruptions and special projects; ability to prioritize workload. Ability to work as a team member and independently.  Ability to clearly articulate policies, procedures, and general technology instruction; troubleshooting.  Comprehend simple verbal instructions and recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers.  Add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply.  Perform these operations using units of money.    Apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions.  Deal with routine and standardized situations with occasional variation.

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Library Assistant performs copy cataloging to add new items and gifts to the library’s database; performs on-going quality control of the database; maintains the library’s magazine collection; maintains proficiency with the integrated library system, national bibliographic services and database standard; maintains the library’s interlibrary loan service, assists with programs, assists patrons with the public computers, provides directional support for library patrons and assists librarians in the assigned department.

    POSITION SUMMARY

Have a good working knowledge on the Use of technology, equipment and software.  Perform a wide variety of technical library support functions; develop, coordinate, and conduct library programs and activities; utilize and maintain automated library systems and computer equipment; library database research & maintenance; identify library collection issues and develop suggestions for enhancements; recognize and resolve conflicts in library data entry; organize workload to keep pace with flow of library materials and services.  

    Abilities: Assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects, and demands; communicates effectively verbally and in written forms; perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.  

    Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities:  Internal:   Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers; Works with library staff on special projects and promotions.   External:     Assists library customers in person and remotely to locate requested information or use library resources in print, in other formats, and online.

    EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

    Education / higher educationMaster's Degree

    For required college degrees, applicable field(s) of study: Library Science. 

    Minimum number of years of directly related experience:  Two years experience working in a library setting or experience with any combination of similar experience in program development, event planning, teaching, inventory selection or management, book store experience, or technical customer service experience in any industry.

    Education and/or experience preferences:  Public library experience preferred.

    Driver’s License requirement:   Infrequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License     Required Endorsements:  None
