Legislation Committee

The NMLA Legislation Committee keeps the membership and the library community informed about state and national library legislation and encourages the enactment of beneficial library legislation. The Committee prepares a legislative agenda for approval by the Executive Board and organizes  N.M.L.A.’s activities during Library Legislative Day. The Committee is composed of a cross-section of the membership of N.M.L.A. Although broad geographical representation is desirable, as a practical matter it is important to have some Committee members in the Santa Fe area who can participate in political activities and attend legislative meetings.  When proposed legislation reflects specific interests of library constituencies, consultation with appropriate groups both inside and outside the library community may be necessary. It may request funding to hire a legislative advocate (lobbyist). It can make recommendations to the Awards Committee on nominees for the N.M.L.A. Legislator of the Year Award.
