Rio Rancho Public Library Gardening Kit and Seed Library

Thursday, February 11, 2021 8:10 AM | Anonymous member (Administrator)

Rio Rancho Public Library was the recipient of a mini grant from the Resilient Communities: Libraries Respond to Climate Change grant. One of the initiatives that we chose to undertake with this funding was to bring back our seed library (this time at both locations) and create gardening tool kits that can be checked out. The seed library is one of most consistent patron inquiries, people just love it! Each of our 4 kits will contain a trowel, transplanter, rounded cultivator, and square cultivator.

In both libraries we are working on creating a garden center that will house our seed library, kits, gardening tip bookmarks, and an ever changing selection of books to be checked out. Our whole initiative kicks off on February 22 with a garden starter kit giveaway. We will be handing out a water can, tool, and seed packet kit to the first 30 people that ask for one!

Our main goal for this project is to get people thinking about sustainability and where their food comes from. We also wanted to provide people the opportunity to try a new hobby without putting a lot of money into it (especially during COVID). Gardening tools are expensive and sometimes cost can be a prohibitive factor when trying something new, we want to help with that.

Shout out to Josh Brynildsen and Jodi Miller the Rio Rancho librarians who got this show on the road!
