Summary:  We support and enhance the teaching, learning, research, and outreach endeavors of NMSU.

Classification Summary: The position reports to the department head of NMSU Library Reference and Research Services department. Additionally, the librarian will collaborate closely with the Director of Instructional Design (DID) of the NMSU Global Campus program, supporting instructional designers, instructors, distance education students, and those enrolled in NMSU Global Campus programs.

Classification Standard Duties:

• Provide general and in-depth reference services (consultations, reference desk shifts, and virtual reference) to all online learners and specialized research consultations to faculty, graduates students, and undergraduate students in key discipline areas.

• Participate in the RRS department’s instruction program, including: Develop and teach library online instruction sessions; serve as instructor of record for one-credit and three-credit courses from time to time.

• Develop online research guides and tutorials that are geared towards distance education students.

• Support online course builders to understand the electronic resources available to instructors and students.

• Act as a liaison or library support contact to online instructional developers and respond to requests from NMSU Global Campus as appropriate.

• Identify key discipline areas and develop a robust selection of updated materials to support instructional design staff and distance education students.

• Advise the library’s collection team about the acquisition of new online collections that would benefit distance education students.

• Provide leadership and vision for NMSU Library’s outreach to distance education students and online teaching faculty.

Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency: MLS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited library school by the start date of the position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Innovative and forward-thinking team player who will create new opportunities to enhance reference services within the NMSU Global campus and for distance education students. The successful candidate will work independently and collaboratively, and adapt to change in a busy, complex, and changing environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate critical thinking, patron confidentiality, attention to detail, and open-mindedness.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working in an online learning environment.

• Knowledge of current trends in the area of online library services.

• Experience explaining various library resources to diverse populations.

• Experience providing library instruction.

• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Bargaining Unit Eligibility: This is NOT a bargaining unit position with American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME).

Standard Work Schedule: Standard (M-F, 8-5)

If Not a Standard Work Schedule: May include evenings and weekends.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Environment: Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

Physical Effort: No or very limited physical effort required.

Lifting Requirements: Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds or some standing or walking.

Risk: No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
