POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for leadership in providing high-quality, robust integrated library systems that facilitate search, discovery, and delivery of library services and resources. Responsible for the development, implementation, maintenance, and advancement of digital projects and collections.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as the administrator for the library's integrated system and as Library website manager. Works with Library leadership team to ensure that search, discovery, and delivery services of the library system and the useability of the library website meet and anticipate patron needs.
  • Assists with training, oversight, and guidance to library staff regarding ILS functionality and digital resources available in the Miller Library. Ensures efficient interactive user engagement with library content. Investigates and promotes new methods and tools for discovering digital content.
  • Regularly participates in Reference Desk shifts by providing general and specialized reference assistance to library patrons. Assists in the development and delivery of new services made possible by emerging technologies.  This includes but is not limited to reference services, library instruction, self-paced tutorials, circulation, e-reserves and interlibrary loan.
  • Works closely with Technical Services personnel to ensure that ILS are optimized for acquisitions, cataloging/metadata, and e-resource management operations. Assists in working with vendors of e-format materials.
  • Serves as the liaison between Miller Library and WNMU’s IT Department.  Coordinates new software releases and evaluates the functionality of option systems features
  • Investigates, recommends, implements, and troubleshoots APIs and other integrations for the purpose of expediting the quality of work within library departments and the user experience with library resources to assure compatibility with library systems and adherence to Copyright Compliance.
  • Participates in library and WNMU committees. Assists in the occasional planning and implementing of successful Special Events program hosted by the Miller Library.
  • Provides a broad range of administrative and supervisory functions. Supervises assigned staff in accordance with WNMU personnel practices including recruitment, training, performance evaluation, guidance, etc. Participates in the process of ongoing personal and professional development. Maintains comprehensive communication among all contacts (internal and external). Models professional standards and ethics in accordance with WNMU philosophy.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge using of current national cataloging/metadata content and structural standards (AACR2rev, RDA, etc.), Library of Congress Subject Headings, Library of Congress Classification, MARC formats, OCLC cataloging procedures, and ability to apply non-MARC metadata schema. 
  • Knowledge using subject analysis and classification systems. 
  • Knowledge using integrated library systems (ILS) and library services platforms (LSP), with an emphasis on Ex Libris products Alma and Primo. 
  • Knowledge of Western New Mexico University’s mission, goals and objectives for student educational opportunities. 
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community including staff, faculty, students, and public patrons. 
  • Skill in operating a variety of library equipment, including microfiche/microfilm readers and printers, photocopiers, computerized catalog systems, networked computers and printers, barcode scanners, label printers, and audio-visual equipment. 
  • Skill in maintaining confidential records and files. 
  • Must be knowledgeable of University policies and procedures. 
  • Must be able to handle multiple deadlines and maintain accuracy. 
  • Must be sensitive to cultural differences within the University and community.
  • Fluent in Microsoft Office Applications.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree with 3 years of library experience required. Master’s degree in Library Science or related field with 2 years of experience preferred.  Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
  • Western New Mexico University is a state funded University. As such, all position are dependent on state appropriations and available funding sources.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT

  • Normal library environment. May be required to lift normal office equipment, books, and materials. 
  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information. 
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions. 
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing, and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
  • May be required to work additional hours or days depending on circumstances.
