The Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation for International Photography is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization committed to fostering positive social discourse in underrepresented communities throughout the world by encouraging emerging and established photographers working in developing nations to keep their lenses fixed on the plight of the poor and disenfranchised. Headquartered in New York, with a presence in Paris and Zurich, the foundation serves the international photographic community through exhibitions, publishing, grants, education, and other curatorial projects.

For the second year, the foundation has announced that it is seeking entries of outstanding work in social documentary photo reportage.

Photographers around the world are encouraged to submit entries focusing on lives and populations ravaged by war, famine, poverty, religious persecution, political oppression, forced migration, and other social injustices. The winning submission will be awarded a grant of $5,000 to be utilized for the production or completion of a social documentary project.

Photographers of all nationalities who are at least 18 years of age are encouraged to apply.

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation is soliciting proposals for 2012 Native Plant Conservation Initiative grants, which are awarded in cooperation with the Plant Conservation Alliance, a partnership between the foundation, ten federal agencies, and more than two hundred and seventy nongovernmental organizations. PCA provides a framework and strategy for linking resources and expertise in developing a coordinated national approach to the conservation of native plants.

The NPCI program funds multi-stakeholder projects that focus on the conservation of native plants and pollinators under any of the following six focal areas: conservation, education, restoration, research, sustainability, and data linkages. There is a strong preference for “on-the-ground” projects that provide plant conservation benefits according to the priorities established by one or more of the funding federal agencies and according to the PCA strategies for plant conservation.

Eligible applicants include 501(c) nonprofit organizations and local, state, and federal government agencies. For-profit businesses and individuals are not eligible to apply directly to the program but are encouraged to work with eligible applicants to develop and submit proposals. Organizations and projects that have received funding and concluded their work successfully under this program are eligible and encouraged to re-apply.

It is anticipated that the initiative will award a total of $380,000 this year. Individual awards typically range from $15,000 to $65,000, with some exceptions. Projects require a minimum 1:1 non-federal match by project partners, including cash or in-kind contributions of goods or services (such as volunteer time).

The complete Request for Proposals and application instructions are available at the NFWF Web site.

The artist applicant must be a past FPF Community Spirit Award recipient, a Community Spirit Award nominee finalist, or a member of a Northern Great Plains tribe located in South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, western Minnesota, Nebraska, or the Eastern Plateau region of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington; a tribe from the Great Lakes Region of Minnesota, Michigan, or Wisconsin; a tribe from any Eastern Seaboard state; or a Hawaiian or Alaska Native.

The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation seeks to provide other nonprofit organizations with the means to educate the public about the special needs of children across the United States.

To help advance its mission, the foundation annually provides funding to nonprofit organizations that contribute to the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual welfare of children through the dissemination of knowledge about new and innovative organizations and/or programs designed to benefit youth; and/or contribute to the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual welfare of children through the dissemination of knowledge already possessed by well-established organizations, to the end that such information can be used more adequately by society.

Applications are invited from nonprofit tax-exempt organizations for programs that have the potential to help American children in a large geographic area (more than one state). Grants may not be used for the normal day-to-day operating expenses of the grantee or for special operating expenses connected with the grant.

Administered by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the Pulling Together Initiative provides funding for programs designed to help control invasive plant species, mostly through the work of public/private partnerships such as cooperative weed management projects.

PTI grants provide an opportunity to initiate working partnerships and demonstrate successful collaborative efforts such as the development of permanent funding sources for weed management areas. To be competitive, a project must prevent, manage, or eradicate invasive and noxious plants through a coordinated program of public/private partnerships and increase public awareness of the adverse impacts of invasive and noxious plants.

Successful proposals will focus on a particular well-defined area such as a watershed, ecosystem, landscape, county, or weed management area; incorporate on-the-ground weed management, eradication, or prevention; target a specific and measurable conservation outcome; be supported by private landowners, state and local governments, and the regional/state offices of federal agencies; have a project steering committee composed of local cooperators who are committed to working together to manage invasive and noxious plants across their jurisdictional boundaries; have a clear, long-term weed management plan based on an integrated pest management approach using the principles of ecosystem management; include a specific, ongoing, and adaptive public outreach and education component; and integrate an early detection/rapid response approach to response to invasives.

Applications will be accepted from private nonprofit 501(c) organizations; federally recognized tribal governments; local, county, and state government agencies; and from field staff of federal government agencies. Individuals and for-profit businesses are not eligible to receive PTI grants, but are encouraged to work with eligible applicants to develop and submit applications.

It is anticipated that the initiative will award a total of $1 million this year. The average range of award amounts is typically $15,000 to $75,000, with some exceptions. Applicants must provide a 1:1 non-federal match for their grant request.

The Roadmaps to Health Prize, part of the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, a collaboration of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute that aims to show what communities can do to create healthier places to live, learn, work, and play, seeks to recognize and honor the efforts and accomplishments of United States communities working at the forefront of population health improvement.

The program is open to all communities in the U.S., large and small, urban and rural. The prize is rooted in the idea that every community is on a unique journey toward better health and that communities’ stories of success are as diverse as their populations. Judges will assess each community individually, looking for tangible signs of improvement relative to current health status and available resources.

The award is a place-based prize that will honor whole communities. Only one prize will be given per community, so collaboration on applications within communities is strongly encouraged. For the purposes of the prize, “community” is defined as one of the following: town, city, county, region (such as contiguous towns, cities, or counties), and tribe or tribal community.

Applicant communities will select a local entity to submit the application and serve as the primary contact application on their behalf. These “community-designated contact organizations” may be formal or informal entities within a community; examples include but are not limited to businesses, coalitions, government agencies, hospitals or healthcare organizations, local foundations, public health departments, schools, or social service agencies.

Each applicant community also will be asked to designate a local governmental or tax-exempt charitable nonprofit entity to accept the $25,000 cash award that comes with the prize, should it win, on its behalf. The community-designated contact organization may serve this role, if eligible.

Up to six communities will be honored with the prize in early 2013.
